Who is it for?
This course is ideal for voice teachers/coaches who are new to working with accents and dialects and want to learn to coach Received Pronunciation (RP) and Standard Southern British English (SSBE). You may be voice coaches working with actors who want to add an extra string to your bow or singing teachers who work with performers needing this accent.
You are probably from a non-RP/SSBE speaking background. While it is important that you speak the English language for us to be able to work on the course, you do not have to have English as a first language and coaching people with English as an Additional Language (EAL) will be considered on the course.
You should have either taken our level one accents and phonetics course or have some knowledge of vocal anatomy and phonetics.
Course Breakdown
Session | Description |
---|---|
Week 1: Context and culture – approaching the accent |
To start the course, we’ll look at the history of both RP and SSBE and what we need to know about the context and culture before we can start to work with it. A homework task will be set to help you familiarise yourself further with the sounds. |
Week 2: Key features part one |
We’ll look at key elements of the pronunciation using IPA, lexical sets, and considering articulatory phonetics A homework task will be set for you to learn to speak a short piece of text with some of the key features (you will not be assessed on how accurate your pronunciation is – this is a learning task). You can choose either RP or SSBE. |
Week 3: Key features part two |
We’ll look at broader features of the pronunciation including things like prosody, oral posture and zoning. Practical task – As a group we will discuss approaches to teaching the key features of the accent as it connects to the text. |
Week 4: Finding resources |
Week four will be about how to select suitable teaching resources as well as creating our own. We will look at some possible resources and analyse and discuss why they may or may not be appropriate. |
Week 5: Considering different needs and approaches to feedback |
This week will discuss how to cater for your neurodiverse clients, how to consider the needs of EAL speakers approaching an accent/dialect, and multimodal learning. We’ll also consider how to give feedback to your clients and the approaches you could take. Practical exercise – I will play you a recording of a student trying our piece of sample text and will ask you to offer some feedback. |
Week 6: Structuring your lessons |
We’ll discuss how to best structure your lessons, how students learn, what to prioritise when you have limited time, and how to meet the needs of different clients. |
Assessment
You will be asked to submit an IPA translation of the text we have worked on in either RP or SSBE, and a 30-minute lesson plan as an introductory lesson to a beginner client who needs to speak the text along with any additional learning resources you might include.
