Authenticating Accents: The Process behind Authenticity!

Authenticity is a present-day buzzword around performance, including performance in a target accent! But what makes accentwork ‘authentic’ or ‘inauthentic’ aside from hitting target sounds? Everyone wants their accent performance to be deemed accurate and believable, yet whether someone achieves authenticity is subjective! Who decides if an accent is authentic, how do they make that assessment, and when does the assessment happen?  Broadening away from the static descriptor ‘authentic’, we will dive into the dynamic ‘process of authentication’ from linguistic anthropology and apply it to accentwork praxis for performers.

Learn, explore, and apply theory about the process of authentication to your accentwork practice! We will define authentication compared to authenticity and other terms, explore authentication as a ‘tactic’ language-users deploy, and apply authentication to accents and the accentwork process itself.

This workshop is based on discoveries from my personal teaching explorations in accentwork. In addition to direct use of the process of authentication for performers, we will also discuss ways to bring authentication into the classroom or to a coaching practice.
